Marine electrics / electrical companies can provide a variety
of services. Their work ranges
from simple vessel re-wiring and electronic repairs to full custom marine installations.
They are usually prepared to handle all types of equipment installations such as audio
visual, marine audio, navigational equipment, satellite communications, IT integration, autopilots, lighting, alarm
systems, bow thrusters and even water makers. They do not
typically enter into any mechanical work with engines etc... as most electrical trades people would not hold the appropriate certificates to handle that work. Make sure that you contract companies which hold the appropriate electrical or electronic trade accreditations through registered training organisations. (Minimum : Electrical Contractors Licence).
Warning: there are some people out there operating as "marine electricians" who have not completed any recognised marine studies and at times come from other industries not even associated with electrical or electronic trades. Have you ever asked yourself, "I wonder what this person working on my vessel did before getting into the marine electrical industry, is he insured or qualified?" If not, you should.
Time wasting and the possibility of causing more unsuspecting damage to the vessel or even serious injury to the client should be of great concern when hiring a trades person. The standards and procedures that good marine electrics companies implement far outweigh the dangers of a "cheap job". The best way to avoid the dramas of an incompetent trades person or company is to ask questions about the exact type of work they do and how much experience they have had in the past and what qualifications they hold.
